At the 2024 Alaska Peer Support Conference, this year highlighting unity and connection in peer support, two VOA Alaska staff members were honored for their exceptional contributions to our community and the field.
Jamie Elkhill, Vice President of Youth Services, received the Lee Brennan Advocacy Award, which recognizes those who go above and beyond for their individuals, roles, community, and policy. The nomination describes Jamie’s efforts as instrumental in adding peer professionals into residential, outpatient, and crisis response services.
“I’ve had the privilege of learning from and healing alongside some really incredible professionals, and I’ve seen firsthand the magic and necessity of having peers embedded into multidisciplinary treatment teams for adults, youth, and families,” said Elkhill.
Melanie Revoltar, Peer Support Specialist in VOA’s Outpatient Services, received the Marlene Johnson Advancement Award, which recognizes those who have contributed their time, skill, and efforts to improve and uplift the peer community. The nomination describes Melanie as a “role model in teaching individuals how to advocate for themselves,” and noting that her ability to connect with her clients is “unparalleled.”
“Thank you for showing me how to do this, because I just bring myself,” said Revoltar.
“At the core of who we are in this work, we’re humans advancing a powerful mission to support those who continue to suffer in the darkness of substance use and mental health challenges. Sharing authentically who we are as humans to support others is a beautiful form of love and connection that adds incredible value to those we serve. Thank you, Melanie and Jamie, for leading the way with your dedication and compassion,” said Julia Luey, President and CEO of VOA Alaska.
At the 2023 Peer Support Conference, VOA Alaska was recognized with the Outstanding Peer Support Organization Award. These recognitions underscore VOA Alaska’s commitment to empowering individuals through lived experiences and authentic connection.
