The Fireweed Society, launched in 2024 with 33 members from the Anchorage community, was created to unite individuals who share VOA Alaska’s mission and passion for helping kids in crisis. Acting as ambassadors, members educate others about VOA Alaska’s impact while bringing hope and opportunity to the youth in its care.

“I have been profoundly inspired by the resilience and fortitude of the youth in VOA Alaska’s care,” says KC Hostetler, a Fireweed Society member. “They are incredible humans and having the opportunity to help them learn new skills or experience new things has been a blessing in my life.”

Members who have joined the Fireweed Society commit to investing $500 or more in VOA’s mission in a one-year time period. This investment can be one-time or recurring to spread the contribution across the year in monthly, quarterly, or semi-annual increments. Membership includes access to special events and engagement opportunities and various ways of advocating for the needs of Alaska’s youth and families, and more.

“The Fireweed Society is an opportunity to make a difference in our community,” KC adds.

Looking ahead, KC mentions she is excited to keep growing the society’s membership with the goal of reaching 100 members by 2026.

“I look forward to continuing to watch the Society grow. It has been a blessing in my life—and seeing the joy and purpose it brings to other Fireweed Society members is a source of inspiration for me,” KC concludes. “In the face of crisis and darkness, the fireweed appears as a beacon of hope. Similarly, our Society brings hope to Alaskan youth after their darkest days.”
