"Serving Anchorage and the Mat-Su Valley"
The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program helps transform the talents, energies, and experiences of seniors into meaningful and significant volunteer service. Through this program, members 55 years of age or older, in Anchorage and the Matanuska-Susitna Valley are provided opportunities to participate more fully in the life of their community. Last year, 450 RSVP members contributed 112,000 hours of service to their communities. RSVP is unique because staff recruits, enrolls, trains, recognizes, tracks hours, provides information and benefits to volunteers for other qualifying organizations rather than our own. Benefits include insurance coverage, mileage reimbursement, classes / seminars and tickets to many community events, at no cost to volunteers. RSVP member volunteers enrich their own lives through this program as well as the lives of others. They discover that when they give, they gain a lot too. Volunteer service tells seniors that they are important — that the world needs them. Studies show that seniors who volunteer live longer, healthier, and
more fulfilling lives.
Project Warm Up invites volunteers of all ages to knit, crochet, or sew warm hats and mittens, which are distributed to people in need in our communities. Supplies and patterns are available. On the last Saturday in October, RSVP participates in the nation-wide "Make A Difference Day", sponsoring a "Knitathon" to highlight the need for warm items for people in need in our community. Donations of yarn, polar fleece, knitting needles, and crochet hooks are always needed.
